- The Old State House, Boston’s oldest public building, was built in 1713. When this national treasure was in need of repair, great strides were taken to preserve its history, making it an ideal project for Lee Kennedy Co.’s historic renovation specialists. Lee Kennedy Co. has completed three restoration projects at the Old State House – repointing of the northeast exterior, miscellaneous interior renovations and a full tower restoration
- The Old State House sits atop the State Street T-Line, one of Boston’s busiest commuter stations. Logistical planning, including material deliveries, trucking, building access and safety planning was a major consideration in planning and executing these sensitive projects on a dense urban site
- Lee Kennedy Co.’s team worked closely with The Bostonian Society to complete both projects within tight budgets and aggressive schedules. All work was performed without disrupting the operating Old State House museum, one of the city’s main tourist attractions
- Documented by the History Channel Series “Save Our History”; the project team re-pointed the building’s northeast corner and seamlessly integrated refurbished 300-year-old brick from New Hampshire into the existing structure. Missing or damaged slates were repaired, secured or replaced and the exterior wood cornice and window frames were restored. The majority of interior work encompassed the first and second floor walls – casting and new plaster crown molding was installed to match the grandeur of the original. Wood trim, wainscot and picture rods were removed, stripped, repaired, and reinstalled, bringing them back to their original luster
- For the tower restoration, the Lee Kennedy Co. team re-gilded the gold dome, restored the windows, applied new copper roofing and wood siding and performed other repairs to make the structure watertight. The team also re-gilded the original weather vane
