This major restoration project was the first of its kind as a select contractor bid for the City and included the complete restoration of the library’s main reading room. Known as Bates Hall, the room boasts the longest barrel-vaulted ceiling in North America. Lee Kennedy Co. also restored and made technology upgrades to the catalogue, newspaper, and micro text rooms; created a new two-story northwest corridor connecting the McKim and Johnson buildings; and restored the marble and granite promenade of the Grand Courtyard.
In addition, the windows were removed, reglazed, refurbished and reinstalled. This project received the Grand Honor Award from the Associated General Contractors’ Build Massachusetts award program.
